Kristi Noem Criticizes Minnesota Leaders
(MENAFN) U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem accused Minnesota authorities of turning the inquiry into a deadly shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer into a political matter.
"I would say that these locals, if you look at what (Minnesota) Gov. (Tim) Walz has said and (Minneapolis) Mayor (Jacob) Frey has said, they've extremely politicized and inappropriately talked about the situation on the ground in their city," Noem told CNN when questioned about the Justice Department’s collaboration with Minnesota officials.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) announced Thursday it "reluctantly" stepped away from the case after the U.S. Attorney’s Office changed course and gave the FBI exclusive control, removing BCA access to evidence, case files, and witness interviews.
Noem further alleged that demonstrators were trained to employ vehicles as lethal weapons and obstruct roadways. "All of these times you see these rioters out there doing that—they've been trained to do that; they know they are training them to break the law," she told Fox News.
White House border adviser Tom Homan stated to a news agency that he believed the ICE agent thought he "did the right thing," adding that under federal statutes, his actions were lawful.
"We gotta stop the hateful rhetoric. Saying this officer is a murderer is dangerous. It's just ridiculous," Homan said. "It's gonna infuriate people more, which means there's gonna be more incidents like this."
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker told CNN that what occurred in Minneapolis is a "tragedy," pointing to other ICE shootings nationwide where no prosecutions followed.
