US says army raid on Venezuela killed seventy-five people

(MENAFN) US authorities believe that roughly 75 people lost their lives during a military operation in Caracas intended to detain Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, according to reports citing officials with knowledge of the assessment.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated varying estimates: one assessment places the death toll between 75 and 80, while another suggests at least 67 fatalities. Those figures reportedly account for members of Venezuelan and Cuban security services, as well as civilians who were caught up in the clashes during the operation.

According to earlier reports, the number of people killed during Saturday’s US military action may have reached 80, based on information provided by a senior Venezuelan official, with the possibility that the total could increase.

The raid took place on Jan. 3, when US special forces conducted a nighttime operation in Caracas that resulted in Maduro being taken into US custody. The action coincided with airstrikes targeting military installations.

Reports indicate the mission was approved by President Donald Trump and was linked to longstanding federal charges against Maduro, including allegations of narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, and corruption.

On Jan. 5, Maduro was brought before a federal court in New York City, appearing in handcuffs and wearing an orange prison uniform, where he entered a plea of not guilty to the charges.
