Russia alleges seizer of border village in Ukraine’s Sumy region

(MENAFN) Russia on Monday announced that its forces have taken control of a settlement along the northeastern border of Ukraine’s Sumy region, according to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry posted on Telegram.

The ministry said Russian troops captured the village of Hrabovske, situated about 51 kilometers (32 miles) southeast of the city of Sumy. The village lies adjacent to Staroselye in Russia’s Belgorod border region.

A Ukrainian military spokesperson, Viktor Trehubov, told state broadcaster Suspilne on Sunday that Russian forces were placing remote mines around Hrabovske to prevent Ukrainian counterattacks. “It seems to me that they planned to go further, to attack the Sumy region, but it didn't work out. That's why they are creating such a small outpost from Hrabovske,” he said.

In late December, Ukrainian sources cited by state news agency Ukrinform reported that Russian troops had crossed into Sumy near Hrabovske, prompting Ukrainian forces to withdraw from several nearby positions. The report also stated that more than 50 people were taken into Russia during the incursion, including 13 Ukrainian servicemen, as confirmed later by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets echoed the claims, saying he had contacted his Russian counterpart, Tatyana Moskalkova, and sent a letter to the International Committee of the Red Cross seeking information on the incident.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine has independently verified the other’s claims, and independent confirmation is difficult due to the ongoing conflict, which has been unfolding for nearly four years.
