Medvedev labels Trump’s Venezuela actions ‘illegal but consistent’
(MENAFN) Russian Security Council Deputy Chair Dmitry Medvedev said on Sunday that US President Donald Trump’s actions in Venezuela are “illegal,” while also recognizing “a certain consistency” in his approach, according to state news agency.
Medvedev, who previously served as Russia’s president, described the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, by US forces as a “clear violation of international law.”
“At the same time, it must be acknowledged that, despite the obvious illegality of Trump's behavior, he has a certain consistency. He and his team are very staunchly defending their country's national interests,” Medvedev said.
Referring to Maduro’s claim that the US is aiming to control Venezuela’s resources, including oil, Medvedev noted that Trump “doesn’t hide it” and suggested that, in comparison, “the US now has nothing to reproach our country for, even formally,” seemingly referencing Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The comments came after Venezuela reported on Saturday that US forces attacked civilian and military sites across multiple states and subsequently declared a national emergency. Trump later confirmed the “large scale” strike, stating that Maduro and his wife had been captured and flown out of the country. He added that the US would temporarily “run” Venezuela to ensure a safe transition and repair the nation’s “broken” oil infrastructure.
Maduro and Flores were taken to a New York detention center and are scheduled to face US court proceedings on drug-trafficking charges. The operation follows months of mounting US pressure on Maduro, who denies the allegations and has expressed willingness to engage in dialogue.
