BYD Surpasses Tesla as Top Global EV Seller in 2025
(MENAFN) Chinese carmaker BYD surpassed its American rival Tesla on Friday, becoming the world’s foremost distributor of electric automobiles for the year 2025.
BYD achieved sales of 2.26 million battery-powered vehicles in 2025, representing a 28% increase compared to the previous year, according to a statement issued on Thursday.
Tesla, on the other hand, announced that it had delivered 1.64 million vehicles during the same period, aligning with its earlier projection of 1.6 million units.
This yearly figure highlighted Tesla’s second straight annual downturn, showing an 8.6% drop from 2024.
When compared with the final quarter of 2024, in which Elon Musk’s EV company registered 495,570 deliveries, the fourth quarter of 2025 reflected nearly a 16% decline.
Tesla’s overall automobile output for the year also fell by 6.7%, totaling 1.65 million units.
Additionally, Tesla experienced a sharp fall in its stock value during the first quarter of 2025, driven by intense rivalry—especially from Chinese EV producers—and damage to its reputation stemming from Musk’s “incendiary political rhetoric.”
