India Appeals for Peaceful Resolution After U.S. Captures Maduro
(MENAFN) India issued an urgent appeal for peaceful resolution Sunday, one day after the US seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife during a military strike in Caracas, with New Delhi characterizing the situation as deeply troubling.
"Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation," an Indian External Affairs Ministry statement said.
New Delhi said it reaffirms "its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela," and "we call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region."
Saturday saw Venezuela's government accuse the US of striking civilian and military sites across multiple states, prompting authorities to declare a national emergency.
US President Donald Trump later confirmed the "large-scale" strike, adding that President Nicolas Maduro and his wife had been "captured and flown out of the country."
The operation followed months of escalating US pressure on Maduro, whom Washington accuses of being involved in drug trafficking. The Venezuelan leader had denied the claims and expressed readiness for talks.
In a joint statement, several left-wing parties in India said they "strongly denounce and condemn" the US "aggression against Venezuela and the kidnapping" of Maduro and his wife.
"This is an attack carried out against a sovereign nation in blatant violation of the UN Charter," the statement said.
