Correa Says US Seizure of Maduro Is “Global Hypocrisy”
(MENAFN) Former Ecuadorian leader Rafael Correa criticized Washington’s detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, describing it as a “disastrous precedent” that risks pushing the world back into “barbarism.”
Speaking to a news agency, he argued that the muted global response has enabled the United States to carry out actions “impossible to accept in the 21st century.”
According to reports, American special forces launched airstrikes on the resource-rich South American nation before seizing Maduro and his spouse during an early Saturday operation.
They were subsequently transported to the US and accused of drug trafficking – charges that Maduro has consistently rejected.
The Venezuelan head of state had previously cautioned that Washington was pursuing regime change to gain control of his country’s natural wealth.
Correa drew a stark comparison, stating, “Imagine for a moment that… [Russian President Vladimir] Putin captured [Ukraine’s Vladimir] Zelensky. Can you imagine what the world’s response would be? Nothing like the response the United States is getting.”
He concluded that the international community’s reaction to the abduction has revealed little more than “global hypocrisy” and ongoing double standards.
