Russia Says It Captured Settlement in Northeastern Ukraine

(MENAFN) Russia announced Sunday it has seized control of a settlement in northeastern Ukraine, intensifying operations in the contested Kharkiv area.

The Defense Ministry said in a statement that its forces captured the village of Podoly, located approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) east of the embattled front-line town of Kupiansk.

In an earlier morning briefing, Ukraine's General Staff reported that Russian forces launched 14 assaults against its positions near eight settlements in the Kupiansk direction.

The settlements identified include Kucherivka, Kurylivka, and Petropavlivka—all positioned in proximity to Podoly—though the village itself was not referenced in the Ukrainian update.

Ukrainian authorities have yet to comment on Russia's claim, and independent verification is difficult due to the ongoing war, nearing its fifth year.

The announcement underscores continued fighting along the northeastern front as the conflict approaches nearly five years of active hostilities without resolution.
