Jordan Valley Authority inks deals to boost irrigation water management

(MENAFN) The Jordan Valley Authority (JVA) on Saturday formalized task-transfer agreements with several water user associations and launched its second irrigation water conservation campaign, aiming to strengthen participatory management of irrigation resources.

JVA Secretary-General Hisham Haisa said the agreements were signed at the Jordan Valley guest house and reflect the authority’s strategy to promote shared responsibility in managing irrigation water, according to a ministry statement.

He noted that six agreements were finalized, covering 18 water user associations that account for roughly 52 percent of the irrigated land in the Jordan Valley.

Haisa explained that the agreements are designed to enhance the efficiency of water resource management and improve service quality for farmers. He added that they form part of an institutional framework intended to empower water user associations as active partners in operating, managing, and maintaining irrigation networks, thereby boosting sustainability and reducing water losses.

Lamia Dabbas of the JVA said the campaign will reach about 450 farms in the Jordan Valley and will focus on identifying and repairing irrigation system leaks, improving water-use efficiency, building the capacities of JVA staff and water user associations, and conducting farmer awareness activities.

She added that the initiative includes training 20 participants through a specialized professional program and is expected to cut irrigation water losses by 15 to 20 percent, translating to water savings of approximately 40,000 cubic metres.

The campaign is being carried out under the Holland Horti Support II project, funded by the Dutch embassy in Jordan, implemented in partnership with Wageningen University, and in cooperation with several national partners.
