Pompeo Points to Israeli Role in Iran Protests

(MENAFN) Former US Secretary of State and CIA Director Mike Pompeo has expressed support for ongoing anti-government demonstrations in Iran, while suggesting that Israeli intelligence operatives are playing a part in the unrest.

The protests, described as the most severe in recent years, erupted last weekend amid soaring inflation and a prolonged economic downturn in the heavily sanctioned Islamic Republic. The turmoil quickly spread across several cities and reportedly led to deadly clashes with security forces.

Pompeo – a strong advocate of Israel who served in President Donald Trump’s first administration and led the “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran – posted on X on Saturday, hinting at possible US involvement in the protests.

He wrote: “The Iranian regime is in trouble… Riots in dozens of cities and the Basij under siege – Mashed, Tehran, Zahedan. Next stop: Baluchistan. 47 years of this regime; POTUS 47. Coincidence?”

He added, “Happy New Year to every Iranian in the streets. Also to every Mossad agent walking beside them.”

His comments came shortly after a Farsi-language X account linked to Israel’s Mossad openly encouraged Iranians to join the demonstrations, claiming that its agents were embedded among the crowds.
