Ruble Records Strongest Gains Since 1994
(MENAFN) The Russian ruble has experienced an exceptional surge this year, outperforming all other major global currencies and achieving its most significant rise since 1994, according to a media outlet.
In addition to its currency strength, the ruble has ranked among the world’s top five highest-yielding assets in 2025, following only precious metals such as platinum, silver, palladium, and gold.
Since January, the ruble has appreciated by 45%, trading close to 78 against the US dollar. This level approaches values last seen before the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, the outlet reported.
Analysts attribute the ruble’s resilience to a sharp reduction in domestic demand for foreign currency, driven by Western sanctions, alongside strict monetary policies that have boosted the appeal of ruble-based investments.
The Central Bank of Russia had maintained a record-high interest rate for three years. In December, it lowered the rate by five percentage points to 16%, aiming to ease inflationary pressures while still navigating the effects of sweeping sanctions tied to the Ukraine conflict.
