Senator Says US Venezuela Strikes Served as Cover for Maduro Capture

(MENAFN) American airstrikes on Venezuela served as tactical cover for a special forces operation to seize President Nicolas Maduro, who now faces prosecution on US soil, Senator Mike Lee revealed Saturday, citing Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The disclosure came after overnight explosions rocked the capital Caracas and warplanes reportedly screamed overhead. Hours later, President Donald Trump confirmed US commandos had executed a military raid, apprehending Maduro and his wife before flying them out of the country. Venezuelan officials denounced the operation as "grave military aggression."

Lee disclosed his phone conversation with Rubio in a Saturday post, writing that "he informed me that Nicolas Maduro has been arrested by US personnel to stand trial on criminal charges in the United States."

"The kinetic action we saw tonight was deployed to protect and defend those executing the arrest warrant," the Republican senator explained, adding that Rubio "anticipates no further action in Venezuela now that Maduro is in US custody."

Rubio meanwhile reshared his July 27 statement declaring Maduro "is not the president of Venezuela" and labeling his administration illegitimate, while alleging the Venezuelan leader runs a massive drug trafficking network.

Maduro has consistently rejected such accusations, insisting Washington fabricated them to justify military intervention aimed at regime change.

US Attorney General Pamela Bondi revealed that Maduro and his wife face New York indictments on charges including "narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, possession of machineguns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess machineguns and destructive devices against the United States."

The raid marks Washington's first South American military intervention of this magnitude since the 1989 Panama invasion. The US has persistently accused Maduro's government of orchestrating international narcotics smuggling—claims Venezuelan leadership forcefully denies.
