Musk Plans to Bankroll Republican Candidates in Midterm Elections

(MENAFN) Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to pour substantial financial resources into Republican midterm campaigns, warning that Democratic control of Congress would spell catastrophe for the nation.

The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive issued a stark assessment Friday while responding to commentary on X from a right-wing political commentator who noted that "Musk is reportedly going all-in funding Republicans to help President [Donald] Trump take back full control in the November midterms."

Musk fired back with an ominous prediction, declaring that "America is toast if the radical left wins."

He elaborated on his concerns, asserting that Democrats "will open the floodgates to illegal immigration and fraud. Won't be America anymore."

Axios disclosed last month through insider sources that Musk has already issued "big checks" to Republican coffers earmarked for congressional contests, with commitments to escalate contributions through 2026.

Republicans have sustained multiple electoral setbacks in special races throughout the previous year, dropping contests even in traditionally secure territories. President Trump's popularity has deteriorated since his second inauguration, with Economist/YouGov polling data released this week revealing a 39% approval rating against 56% disapproval.

Musk emerged as Trump's most prominent financial backer during the 2024 presidential campaign, contributing $290 million as the race's largest individual donor. Following Trump's electoral victory, the president appointed him to lead the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a federal cost-reduction initiative.

Their alliance fractured dramatically in June over Trump's signature "big, beautiful bill," which dramatically increased federal expenditures. Musk, who resigned from DOGE leadership during the conflict, condemned the measure as a "disgusting abomination," linked the president to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, and contemplated launching an independent political movement to challenge Republican dominance. Trump dismissed the technology mogul as "crazy."

Recent developments suggest reconciliation may be underway. White House footage from a November dinner captured Trump patting Musk on the arm in an apparent gesture of restored rapport. Media reports the two now maintain "occasionally" phone contact.
