Blaze Strikes Crans-Montana on New Year’s Eve
(MENAFN) A catastrophic fire swept through a well-known entertainment spot in the alpine resort of Crans-Montana shortly after New Year’s celebrations, claiming numerous lives and leaving many others wounded.
Authorities have yet to provide precise casualty figures as families are still being informed, but reports suggest that up to 40 individuals perished, with several more suffering serious injuries.
Local hospitals are said to be inundated with burn victims, according to a media outlet.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly after midnight following accounts of a powerful explosion and subsequent blaze at or near a bar and lounge popular among holidaymakers.
Videos shared on social media depict flames consuming parts of the establishment and thick smoke billowing into the night sky.
“There are several hypotheses, but our main theory is that the entire room caught fire, leading to an explosion,” explained Valais attorney general Beatrice Pilloud during a press briefing.
She stressed that it was too early to identify the cause but confirmed that investigators had dismissed the possibility of a “terrorist attack.”
Crans-Montana, situated in the canton of Valais in southwestern Switzerland, is among the nation’s most renowned mountain resorts. Officials have sealed off the affected zone while forensic specialists continue their investigation.
