Protests Erupt in Iran Amid Currency Collapse
(MENAFN) Iran has been engulfed by widespread demonstrations triggered by a prolonged economic downturn and severe instability of its national currency.
The turmoil has been applauded by Israel’s Mossad intelligence service, which asserted that its operatives are present among the demonstrators.
The unrest began over the weekend when merchants in Tehran staged a strike after the rial plunged to a historic low of roughly 1.44 million against the US dollar, compared with 860,000 a year earlier. Officials acknowledged the economic difficulties but pledged a “decisive response” to what they described as destabilization.
Iran’s long-standing rival, Israel, openly backed the protests, with Mossad posting on its Farsi-language X account: “Go out into the streets together. The time has come. We are with you. Not just from a distance or through words. We are also with you on the ground.”
The demonstrations quickly expanded to several cities nationwide and took on a political dimension, with some participants calling for the restoration of the monarchy that was overthrown during the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
According to unverified footage circulating online, the protests turned violent in multiple areas, with crowds attacking government offices and facilities linked to Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), setting them ablaze.
