Slovak PM says US strike on Venezuela weakens post-WWII world order

(MENAFN) Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Saturday that the US military strike on Venezuela demonstrates the continuing collapse of the post-World War II international system.

Earlier, US forces carried out airstrikes on Venezuela, capturing President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and bringing them to the United States, where they face charges of drug trafficking conspiracy. Maduro has denied the allegations, calling the operation a move by Washington to pursue regime change and seize Venezuelan resources. US President Donald Trump stated that the US would “run” Venezuela and take control of its oil industry following Maduro’s removal.

“The US military action in Venezuela is further evidence of the breakdown of the world order created after World War II,” Fico said on social media. “International law does not apply, military force is used without a UN Security Council mandate, and everyone who is big and strong does whatever they want in promoting their own interests.”

Fico added that, as the leader of a small country, he opposes this “subversion of international law,” citing prior examples such as the US invasion of Iraq, the non-recognition of Kosovo, Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, and the situation in Gaza. He questioned how the EU will respond, stating the US strike “deserves condemnation.”

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for “restraint” and adherence to the UN Charter, while China and Russia strongly criticized the attacks. The Russian Foreign Ministry described the strikes and Maduro’s capture as an “unacceptable infringement on the sovereignty of an independent state” and urged Washington to release him.
