UN human rights chief expresses alarm over US strikes in Venezuela
(MENAFN) The UN’s top human rights official expressed deep concern on Saturday over the unfolding situation in Venezuela after US military strikes and the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
“Volker Turk alarmed by U.S. intervention in Venezuela. We urge everyone to exercise restraint and fully respect the UN Charter and international human rights law,” the office stated on the US social media platform X. It emphasized that “the protection of people in Venezuela is paramount and must guide any further action.”
Venezuelan authorities accused the US of attacking both civilian and military targets across multiple states and declared a national emergency. US President Donald Trump confirmed on his platform Truth Social that the “large scale” operation resulted in Maduro and his wife being “captured and flown out of the country.”
The strikes followed months of US pressure on Maduro over alleged involvement in drug trafficking, claims the Venezuelan leader denies. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez said officials remain “unaware” of Maduro’s whereabouts and demanded “proof of life” from the Trump administration.
