UK PM says Britain played no role in US strikes, seeks full facts first

(MENAFN) UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday said he is not ready to condemn US strikes on Venezuela, stressing that Britain was not involved “in any way” and that he first wants to gather information from the ground.

Asked whether he condemns the US strikes, Starmer said he wants to "establish facts" and speak with US President Donald Trump about the “fast-moving situation.” “What I can say is that the UK was not involved in any way in this operation, and as you expect, we're focusing on British nationals in Venezuela are working very closely with our embassy,” he added.

Amid the unfolding events, Starmer reiterated: “I want to establish the facts first. I want to speak to President Trump. I want to speak to allies, as I say I can be absolutely clear we were not involved in that.” He also said: “I always say and believe we should uphold international law.”

The prime minister noted that the UK Embassy in Venezuela is working to ensure the country’s roughly 500 British citizens are “well looked-after, safeguarded, and get appropriate advice.”

Earlier, several UK politicians and party leaders condemned the US strikes, calling them a violation of international law.

Venezuelan authorities accused the US of targeting civilian and military sites across multiple states and declared a national emergency. US President Trump confirmed the “large scale” operation on his social media platform Truth Social, stating that Maduro and his wife were “captured and flown out of the country.”

The attacks follow months of US pressure on Maduro, who Washington alleges is involved in drug trafficking. Maduro has denied the claims and expressed willingness for talks. Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez said officials are “unaware” of Maduro’s location and demanded “proof of life” from the Trump administration.
