Al Rayyan Municipality Receives 6,691 Blue Containers For Sorting Waste At Source
Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Municipality has distributed 6,691 blue containers across Al Rayyan Municipality as part of the National Waste Sorting at Source Programme, in a move that supports Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Ministry's public cleanliness strategy.
The initiative aims to promote environmental sustainability by encouraging residents to separate waste at the source and place it in designated containers.
The blue containers are allocated for recyclable materials, including metals, paper, plastic, and glass, while grey containers are used for residual and organic waste such as cleaning waste and food leftovers. This clear classification system is designed to make waste sorting easier and more effective for households and communities.
During November 2025 alone, 667 blue recycling containers were distributed in Al Rayyan, alongside an equal number of grey containers, as part of the programme's phased implementation.
The distribution covered several areas, including South Muraikh, Al Waab, Rawdat Aba Al Hiran, Gharafat Al Rayyan, Fereej Al Sudan, and Fereej Al Murra.
Through the continued expansion of the Waste Sorting from Source Programme, the Ministry of Municipality reaffirms its commitment to sustainable waste management, environmental protection, and community participation, and expressed its appreciation to residents for their cooperation in ensuring the success of the initiative.
The programme is aligned with Qatar's National Vision 2030 and contributes directly to environmental sustainability by reducing reliance on raw materials, cutting waste management costs, and encouraging industries to utilise recycled resources.
The waste segregation at source programme was first launched in 2019 as a pilot project. The trial phase successfully introduced recycling practices in schools, healthcare centres, banks, and public parks.
The programme gained further momentum during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, where waste segregation was integrated into the tournament's sustainability operations, earning international recognition.
To ensure its success, the Ministry has invested in public awareness campaigns, outreach programmes, and training sessions targeting households and domestic workers, who play a vital role in daily waste disposal. Educational materials, awareness lectures, and even barcoded recycling bins with QR codes provide residents with instructions on proper waste segregation.
The Ministry of Municipality continues to expand its awareness campaigns through partnerships with mosques, social media platforms, and community events.
