Rubio Comments on US Strikes in Venezuela
(MENAFN) US military operations in Venezuela were carried out to provide cover for the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro, who is expected to face prosecution on American soil, according to Senator Mike Lee, citing Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The remarks came after overnight blasts and reports of fighter jets flying over Caracas. Later that day, President Donald Trump confirmed that US special forces had conducted a mission resulting in Maduro and his wife being taken into custody and flown out of Venezuela. Officials in Caracas denounced the strikes as “grave military aggression.”
In a statement on Saturday, Lee explained that he had spoken with Rubio, who told him “he informed me that Nicolas Maduro has been arrested by US personnel to stand trial on criminal charges in the United States.”
“The kinetic action we saw tonight was deployed to protect and defend those executing the arrest warrant,” Lee added, noting that Rubio “anticipates no further action in Venezuela now that Maduro is in US custody.”
Meanwhile, Rubio reposted his July 27 message declaring that Maduro “is not the president of Venezuela” and that his administration lacks legitimacy, while alleging that the Venezuelan leader heads a major drug cartel.
