Trump Rejects Machado as Venezuela’s Future Leader

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump has dismissed Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado as a possible national leader, even though the Nobel laureate openly supported the US military campaign against her own country.

On Saturday, American forces conducted airstrikes on Venezuela, leading to the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, who were subsequently transferred to the United States and charged with conspiracy to traffic narcotics—allegations Maduro has consistently denied.

During a press briefing, Trump was asked whether he had spoken with Machado or considered her a viable successor following Maduro’s detention.

“I think it’d be very tough for her to be the leader. She doesn’t have the support or the respect within the country. She’s a very nice woman but she doesn’t have the respect,” Trump remarked.

Machado, a former legislator with longstanding ties to Washington, has previously organized anti-government demonstrations and accused Maduro of “illegally” claiming victory in the 2024 elections. Venezuelan authorities barred her from holding public office, accusing her of backing foreign sanctions and advocating for US military involvement.

In December, she received the Nobel Peace Prize, with the Nobel Committee praising “her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
