Russian Air Defenses Intercept Ukrainian Drones on New Year’s Eve

(MENAFN) Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin announced that several Ukrainian long-range drones were intercepted as they approached the Russian capital on New Year’s Eve. Authorities confirmed that no injuries or damage occurred.

Sobyanin stated on Telegram at 11:55pm, coinciding with President Vladimir Putin’s annual New Year’s Eve address, that “the Russian air defense forces have destroyed one UAV flying toward Moscow.”

Another drone was neutralized shortly after midnight, while seven more were intercepted between 2am and 4am on Thursday. Emergency crews were dispatched to the crash sites to conduct inspections.

As a precautionary measure, flights at Domodedovo Airport were temporarily suspended.
The incident followed a similar attempted drone strike the previous day, when Russian defenses shot down at least 21 hostile UAVs. Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov reported that a 57-year-old man sustained shrapnel injuries to his back and arm during that attack.

Ukraine has repeatedly carried out drone operations deep inside Russian territory in recent months, aiming at critical infrastructure and residential areas. Russian officials have characterized these actions as desperate “terrorist attacks.”
