Starmer, Zelensky hold phone call on ceasefire efforts

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call on Saturday to discuss ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine, including plans for a potential multinational force following a ceasefire.

According to a statement from the British prime minister’s office, both leaders welcomed the United States’ continued push for a “just and lasting peace” and agreed that “no party wanted that more than Ukraine.”

During the call, Starmer praised the national security adviser-level talks currently taking place in Kyiv and said he looked forward to further progress at a leaders’ meeting scheduled in Paris on Tuesday.

Zelenskyy described the conversation as “good,” noting that it covered the Kyiv talks as well as broader diplomatic initiatives. He also highlighted discussions regarding the frozen proceeds from the sale of Chelsea football club, stating on social media platform X: “£2.5 billion that can and must significantly help protect lives and support Ukraine’s recovery after all the Russian strikes.”

Earlier on Saturday, Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, confirmed that officials had begun working jointly in Kyiv with national security advisers from several European countries on talks aimed at ending the conflict.

The UK statement added that the discussions included planning for steps to ensure a multinational force could be deployed in the days following a ceasefire. Starmer also welcomed the appointment of Lt. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov as head of Ukraine’s Office of the President and expressed his team’s readiness to cooperate closely with him.
