  • Fire tore through Le Constellation in Crans-Montana around 1:30 a.m., with reports of about 40 dead and at least 100 injured.
  • Officials say there is no sign of terrorism, but evacuation design and safety compliance are under scrutiny.
  • In peak season, a local venue becomes an international risk.

A New Year's Eve party at a ski resort turned into an emergency in minutes. Just after 1:30 a.m. local time, a fire broke out inside Le Constellation, a bar and lounge in Crans-Montana. Witnesses reported a loud bang as smoke spread.

Valais cantonal police have described“dozens” of deaths. Italy's foreign ministry has estimated roughly 40 fatalities.

Authorities have reported more than a hundred injured, many in critical condition, and warned that several victims are likely foreigners because the resort draws international visitors at year-end.

The response was large: more than ten helicopters, about forty ambulances, and roughly 150 responders.

The most severe cases were sent to the Hospital of Sion, where operating rooms and intensive-care beds quickly filled. A psychological support unit was set up for families and witnesses.

Several accounts place the venue in a lower-level space reached by stairs. In a fast-moving fire, smoke can erase visibility and turn one staircase into a choke point. That geometry matters when a room is packed and people do not know the exits.

Investigators have not confirmed a cause. Officials say evidence collected so far allows them, at this stage, to exclude an attack, and they are treating the event as accidental while examining ignition sources, occupancy, and legal safety measures.

Fireworks are part of the background. Crans-Montana had prohibited them for New Year celebrations because of dry conditions and weak winter snow cover.

Reports suggest the ban may not have been universally respected, but authorities have not linked that to the fire.

Crans-Montana sells a promise of order. A catastrophe in an elite venue will intensify scrutiny of inspections and whether“exclusive” settings are held to standards that match their prices.
