Senior Russian general gets killed in car explosion in Moscow
(MENAFN) A high-ranking Russian military officer was killed Monday in a car bombing in Moscow, authorities confirmed.
Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who headed the Operational Training Department of the Russian General Staff, died from injuries sustained in the blast, according to a statement by Russia’s Investigative Committee on social media.
“According to investigators, on the morning of Dec. 22, an explosive device planted under the bottom of a car was detonated on Yasenevaya Street in Moscow,” the statement said.
Investigators have opened a criminal case and are exploring multiple theories about the attack.
“One of them is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” the statement added. Ukrainian officials have not commented on the allegation.
This incident follows a series of high-profile explosions targeting Russian military leaders. In April, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car blast in the Moscow region, with Russian authorities blaming Ukraine’s Security Service, though Kyiv neither confirmed nor denied involvement.
Last December, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, chief of Russia’s Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Defense Troops, was also killed in a Moscow explosion. Ukrainian media outlets, citing sources, reported that Kirillov’s death resulted from a “special operation” conducted by Ukraine’s Security Service.
The latest attack adds to mounting security concerns in Russia and highlights the continued volatility surrounding the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
