Australia Sees Sharp Rise in Measles Cases

(MENAFN) Measles infections in Australia have nearly tripled in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to local reports on Monday.

Figures show that Australia has documented 168 cases so far this year, a steep increase from the 57 cases recorded in 2024, a news agency reported.

This surge comes against the backdrop of widespread measles outbreaks in 59 countries during 2024.

Australia’s case history reveals 26 infections in 2023, seven in 2022, and none in 2021. The nation had been declared measles-free in 2014, but a resurgence occurred in 2019, when cases spiked to 284.

The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that measles is a highly infectious airborne illness caused by a virus, capable of leading to severe health complications and fatalities.

Despite the existence of an effective vaccine, global data shows that approximately 95,000 measles-related deaths were reported in 2024, primarily among children under five who were either unvaccinated or insufficiently vaccinated.
