Srinagar- The Department of Cardiology at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has successfully performed the first-ever implantation of a Micra leadless pacemaker in Kashmir, marking a significant milestone in advanced cardiac rhythm management in the region.

The pioneering procedure was carried out in a high-risk patient with a history of bilateral pacemaker allergy and recurrent pacemaker pocket infections, necessitating complete removal of the conventional pacing system. Given the heightened risk of reinfection, a leadless pacemaker was selected as the safest and most effective alternative.

The Micra leadless pacemaker is a miniaturized pacemaker implanted directly into the right ventricle through a catheter-based approach. Unlike traditional pacemakers, it does not require a surgical chest pocket or transvenous leads, thereby significantly reducing the risk of device-related infections. The device, nearly 90 percent smaller than conventional pacemakers, offers reliable pacing while minimizing procedural and long-term complications-particularly beneficial for patients with prior cardiac implantable electronic device infections.

The procedure was performed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory using a minimally invasive femoral venous approach under fluoroscopic guidance. The device was precisely positioned within the right ventricle, achieving stable pacing without any chest incision. The patient had an uneventful recovery, underscoring the advantages of leadless pacing in terms of reduced infection risk, shorter hospital stay, and faster return to routine activity.

Congratulating the Department of Cardiology on this landmark achievement, Director SKIMS / EOSG Prof.M Ashraf Ganie stated,“Such advancements in patient care take us forward with our clearly defined objective of providing the most advanced and evidence-based treatment to the people across Jammu and Kashmir. The successful implantation of a Micra leadless pacemaker reflects SKIMS' continued commitment to innovation, excellence, and patient safety.”
