Trump states he could claim one billion dollars over FBI raid
(MENAFN) Donald Trump claimed at a rally on Friday that he could award himself $1 billion in damages from US government funds following the FBI’s 2022 search of his Mar-a-Lago estate. The raid, conducted as part of an investigation into his handling of classified documents, was later dismissed by a judge, who ruled that Special Counsel Jack Smith lacked authority to prosecute him.
During his speech in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Trump called the search “illegal” and accused the Department of Justice under then-President Joe Biden of forcing the operation.
He said, “These thugs are disgusting and we cannot let them get away with this stuff,” adding that he had filed a lawsuit over the raid and expected to prevail.
Trump joked about the unusual situation, saying, “There is only one problem… I am suing and I am the one that is supposed to settle. So maybe I will give myself $1 billion and give it all to charity. Does that make sense?” He continued, “Donald Trump sues the US. Donald Trump becomes president. And now Donald Trump has to settle the suit… Isn’t that a strange position to be in? I have got to make a deal – I negotiate with myself.”
He also suggested that the settlement money could be kept or donated to charity, promising that “whatever happens, it is all going to good charities.” Trump’s legal team filed two administrative claims in 2023 and 2024 regarding DOJ investigations, which are reviewed internally before any court action. Reports indicate he has sought a $230 million settlement from the Department of Justice.
