U.S.-Qatar Forge USD240B Defense Partnership

(MENAFN) Qatar and the United States solidified their military and economic alliance Saturday, announcing sweeping defense initiatives and massive investment commitments following high-level strategic discussions in the American capital.

The nations concluded their Seventh Strategic Dialogue on December 17 in Washington, with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio leading negotiations, the Qatari Foreign Ministry reported in an official communiqué.

Both governments reinforced their military partnership framework established under a September 29 executive directive guaranteeing Qatari security, the joint declaration stated.

The defense collaboration encompasses "significant military infrastructure upgrades at Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, advancing air and maritime security, and increasing NATO interoperability through joint training and operational initiatives," according to the joint statement.

Officials reaffirmed pledges outlined during President Donald Trump's May visit to Doha, which include prospective capital injections surpassing $38 billion—covering burden-sharing contributions at Al-Udeid Base and development of next-generation military systems.

Negotiators also explored creating an unprecedented bilateral joint air defense command headquarters, the statement revealed.

Washington pledged unwavering support for "Qatar's security and territorial integrity, while Qatar underscored the value of continued cooperation in addressing shared security challenges," the statement said.

Rubio applauded Qatar's procurement of cutting-edge weaponry, highlighting a $2 billion contract with General Atomics for Unmanned Aircraft Systems and a separate $1 billion arrangement with Raytheon to bolster counter-drone defenses, the announcement noted.

The bilateral defense relationship traces back to a cooperation accord inked in June 1992.

This past October, Trump issued an executive order vowing to safeguard Qatari sovereignty, including potential military intervention if attacked—a measure enacted following an Israeli airstrike targeting Hamas leadership in Doha.

On October 25, Trump lauded Qatar as a "great ally," acknowledging its pivotal contribution to Middle Eastern diplomatic efforts.

Economic Partnerships Exceed $240 Billion
On commercial matters, both nations emphasized their robust economic ties and referenced agreements valued above $240 billion finalized during Trump's Qatari visit in May 2025.

This year's bilateral contracts featured landmark deals, including a $96 billion agreement between Qatar Airways and Boeing to acquire 210 aircraft—787 Dreamliner and 777X variants powered by GE Aerospace engines—sustaining over 154,000 American positions annually and potentially generating more than one million jobs in coming years.

Concerning broader regional stability, Doha and Washington voiced backing for Syrian stabilization efforts, counterterrorism operations, and economic reconstruction initiatives.

Representatives from both governments addressed mutual strategic concerns spanning Gaza, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Haiti, the statement said.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the partnership as a force supporting peace and stability and their shared commitment to addressing regional and global threats.

Officials expressed anticipation for convening the subsequent strategic dialogue round in Doha during 2026.
