Israeli Far-Right Minister Storms Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound

(MENAFN) An Israeli cabinet minister forcibly entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Wednesday, Palestinian sources confirmed, in a provocative move timed just 48 hours before Israel marks the anniversary of its seizure of the city.

Yitzhak Wasserlauf, Minister of Negev and Galilee Affairs and a senior figure within the hardline Otzma Yehudit party — headed by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir — led the incursion into one of Islam's holiest sites.

This is not the first time the two ministers have breached the compound. Both Wasserlauf and Ben-Gvir have conducted previous forced entries into Al-Aqsa, each triggering sharp condemnations from Palestinian leadership and governments across the Arab world.

Wednesday's intrusion coincides with heightened tensions ahead of Israel's commemoration — marked according to the Hebrew calendar — of its 1967 military occupation of East Jerusalem. Far-right Israeli groups have openly mobilized their supporters to storm the Al-Aqsa compound as part of the occasion, while a flag march through East Jerusalem is set for Thursday evening.

Israel seized East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and formally annexed the entire city in 1980 — a unilateral action that has never received international legal recognition and remains widely condemned under international law.
