Israeli army renews its violations of Syria’s sovereignty
(MENAFN) Israeli forces on Saturday entered several villages in Syria’s southwestern Quneitra province, setting up checkpoints, according to Syrian media reports.
State-run news agency reported that troops moved into the village of Ain Ziwan using five military vehicles, establishing a temporary checkpoint. In addition, Israeli forces entered al-Ajraf village in central Quneitra countryside with four vehicles, setting up a checkpoint to search passersby.
The incursions occurred a day after residents in al-Salam city staged a protest against ongoing Israeli attacks on civilians and property, according to local sources.
Despite Syria posing no immediate military threat, Israeli airstrikes have repeatedly targeted Syrian territory, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to military sites, vehicles, weapons, and ammunition.
Damascus and Tel Aviv are reportedly negotiating a possible security agreement, but Syria has made the restoration of pre-December 8, 2024, conditions a prerequisite for any deal.
Israel has maintained control over most of Syria’s Golan Heights since 1967 and declared the collapse of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement following the fall of the Assad regime on Dec. 8, 2024, moving to occupy the buffer zone.
Syrian sources say the ongoing Israeli violations continue to hinder efforts to restore stability and obstruct government plans to attract investment for economic recovery.
