US designates four European Antifa organizations as terrorist entities
(MENAFN) The United States has officially designated four European Antifa organizations as terrorist entities, the State Department announced on Thursday. The action is part of President Donald Trump’s broader initiative to address escalating political violence.
Earlier in September, the US chapter of the anti-fascist movement, which describes itself as opposing fascism, was classified as a domestic terrorist group after the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
According to the announcement, the European groups receiving the Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) status include Antifa Ost in Germany, the Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front in Italy, and two Greece-based organizations: Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense.
Next week, all four groups are also expected to be designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). These dual labels will freeze their assets, prohibit financial interactions, block members from entering the United States, and criminalize providing support to them.
The State Department highlighted that Antifa Ost has been responsible for several attacks on individuals in Germany between 2018 and 2023 and was connected to assaults in Budapest in February 2023. Hungary also recognized the group as a terrorist organization in September.
The other three European organizations have similarly claimed responsibility for improvised explosive device attacks and issued threats targeting political, economic, and government institutions in Italy and Greece.
When Trump designated Antifa as a terrorist organization in September, he described it as a “militarist, anarchist enterprise” aiming to topple the US government. His directive instructed federal agencies to utilize all legal means to investigate, disrupt, and dismantle any illegal operations involving Antifa, including prosecuting those providing material support.
Antifa, short for anti-fascist, is a loosely connected network of left-leaning activists known for staging counter-protests, often masked or dressed in black. The movement drew widespread attention during the 2020 George Floyd unrest and has been associated with violent clashes involving police, journalists, and right-wing groups.
