Muslim Uber driver gets targeted in violent assault in Montreal
(MENAFN) A violent incident involving a Muslim ride-share driver in Montreal has sparked renewed concern over growing anti-Muslim hostility in Quebec and across Canada, according to statements from a civil rights organization.
The group reported that the driver narrowly survived what it described as an attempted killing after a passenger allegedly demanded that he reveal his religious identity. The situation escalated when the passenger reportedly issued a direct threat, saying, “I’m going to slit your throat.”
According to accounts shared by the organization, the attack was halted before serious harm occurred due to the intervention of another passenger, who stepped in and prevented further violence.
Condemning the incident, the organization’s leadership stressed the gravity of such acts occurring locally. “It is deeply troubling to see something like this happen here, in our own province of Quebec. Muslims are not a threat. It is time for our political leaders to say this clearly and take action to stop the rise of hatred,” its chief executive said in a public statement.
The group emphasized that no individual in Quebec should have to fear for their safety because of their religious beliefs, noting that certain details surrounding the incident are still under verification.
It also confirmed ongoing communication with law enforcement to ensure accountability for those responsible. Additionally, the organization called on provincial leaders to issue strong condemnations of the attack and to implement concrete steps aimed at easing social tensions and countering hate-driven violence.
