Zelensky Opposes U.S. Economic Zone Plan in Donbas Region

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared Sunday that Washington's proposal for a "free economic zone" in eastern Donbas territories fails to meet fairness standards.

Zelensky expressed concerns about unclear governance structures for the proposed zone, emphasizing Kyiv's need to explore backup strategies should ongoing peace negotiations collapse.

According to media, the Ukrainian leader described an American compromise proposal involving Ukrainian military withdrawal from the area, with Moscow agreeing not to occupy certain eastern territories.

"We need to pull ourselves together, find another approach and do everything possible to end this war," Zelensky said.

The president's remarks highlight uncertainty over who would administer the economic zone and signal Ukraine's willingness to pursue alternative pathways toward conflict resolution with Russia.
