Former Iraqi Leader to Become UN Refugee Chief

(MENAFN) A document that emerged on Friday suggests that former Iraqi President Barham Salih is set to assume the role of the UN's next refugee chief.

The document, dated Dec. 11 and reviewed by a news agency, indicates that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres intends to recommend Salih's election as the forthcoming high commissioner for refugees to the UN General Assembly at the close of 2025, after Filippo Grandi's current tenure concludes.

Guterres is planning to nominate Salih for a five-year term as the UN high commissioner for refugees, beginning Jan. 1, 2026, and running through Dec. 31, 2030.

However, the United Nations has yet to officially verify either the document or the potential appointment.

"For the moment, I would just like to say that the process is ongoing, and once it's finished, there will be an official announcement made by the United Nations," stated Alessandra Vellucci, the director of information services for the international organization in Geneva, during a press briefing on Friday.
