Drone attack in Sudan kills six Bangladeshi UN peacekeepers

(MENAFN) Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers lost their lives and eight others were injured in a drone attack on a United Nations base in Abyei, southern Sudan, authorities reported Saturday.

Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government, expressed shock over the attack and stated: “The United Nations has already been requested to take urgent measures to ensure the highest level of medical treatment and necessary assistance to the injured peacekeepers.”

The Bangladeshi army earlier confirmed on the US social media platform Facebook that the attack occurred in Abyei and that fighting was still ongoing. No immediate statement was issued by the UN mission.

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), deployed in 2011, maintains a peacekeeping presence in the disputed region. The oil-rich Abyei Administrative Area is claimed by both South Sudan and Sudan and has been a flashpoint for conflict for years.

UNISFA’s mandate was most recently renewed last month.
