UN Chief Denounces Drone Strike on UN Peacekeeping Facility in Sudan

(MENAFN) United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a forceful denunciation Saturday following drone assaults on the UN peacekeeping logistics facility in Kadugli, Sudan, which occurred earlier that day.

The strikes claimed six lives and left eight wounded—all personnel from the Bangladeshi peacekeeping contingent deployed with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei, the UN chief confirmed in an official statement.

Guterres conveyed his "deepest and heartfelt condolences" to the government and people of Bangladesh and to the families of the fallen peacekeepers, while extending wishes for rapid recovery to those wounded.

"Attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law and I remind all parties to the conflict of their obligation to protect UN personnel and civilians," he said. "There will need to be accountability."

Within the statement, the UN chief renewed his appeal for combatants to establish an immediate halt to military operations and return to negotiations aimed at securing a durable ceasefire alongside a comprehensive, inclusive and Sudanese-owned political framework.

The Sudanese Armed Forces have attributed the attack to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), an accusation the RSF has rejected.
