Earthquake Today: Japan Sees 6.7 Magnitude Tremors, Second In A Week Tsunami Advisory Issued

(MENAFN- Live Mint) A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday,s days after a bigger 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the same region, injuring around 50 people. Damage and injuries weren't immediately clear.

The quake occurred off the east coast of Aomori prefecture, in the north of Japan's main Honshu island, at a depth of 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) at 11:44 am local time, the Japan Meteorological Agency was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also said that the quake measured 6.7 and was 130 kilometres (81 miles) off the city of Kuji in Iwate prefecture on the main island of Honshu.

Japanese Broadcaster NHK said that the level of shaking was less than the bigger tremor late Monday, which had knocked items off shelves, torn apart roads, smashed windows and triggered tsunami waves of up to 70 centimetres.

Japan issues tsunami warning

Following the 6.5-magnitude earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a warning of a tsunami. The Pacific coast of Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate and Miyagi prefectures could see a tsunami of up to 1 meter (3.2 feet), the agency added.

An advisory is a lower level of caution than a warning.

A tsunami more than 2 feet (0.6 meters) above tide levels was measured in Kuji port in Iwate prefecture before all tsunami advisories were lifted. Power was knocked out for hundreds of homes but was mostly restored Tuesday morning.

Japan earthquake

Friday's quake followed a 7.5 magnitude earthquake earlier this week in the north that caused injuries, light damage and a tsunami in Pacific coastal communities.

According to news agency AFP, at least 50 people were injured in that quake on Monday off the coast of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan's main Honshu island.

Following Monday's tremor, the JMA had published a rare special advisory warning that another quake of similar or greater size was possible for another week.

The advisory covered the Sanriku area on the northeastern tip of Japan's main island of Honshu and the northern island of Hokkaido, facing the Pacific.

Meanwhile, officials were quoted by the Associated Press as saying that after Monday's quake, there was also a slight increase in risk of a magnitude 8-level quake and possible tsunami occurring along Japan's northeastern coast from Chiba, just east of Tokyo, to Hokkaido.

The region is haunted by the memory of a massive 9.0-magnitude undersea quake in 2011, which triggered a tsunami that left around 18,500 people dead or missing.

In August 2024, the JMA issued its first special advisory, for the southern half of Japan's Pacific coast warning of a possible "megaquake" along the Nankai Trough.

Japan sits on top of four major tectonic plates along the western edge of the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is one of the world's most seismically active countries.

The archipelago, home to around 125 million people, experiences around 1,500 jolts every year.

The vast majority are mild, although the damage they cause varies according to their location and depth below the Earth's surface.
