Milei's Planned London Trip Reopens Old Falklands Wounds And A 40-Year Arms Debate

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) Key Points

  • Milei plans a 2026 visit to London and signals a reset with the UK after decades of distrust.
  • He says both sides are discussing softer British arms restrictions, while London publicly denies any such negotiations.
  • The move comes as Argentina buys F-16 jets and pivots toward a clearer pro-Western, pro-market course.

In a British newspaper interview, President Javier Milei said he wants to visit London in 2026. If it happens, it would be the first trip by an Argentine president since Carlos Menem in 1998.

Milei said he invited Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Buenos Aires and praised Brexit figure Nigel Farage. What grabbed attention was not the travel plan but the weapons question.

Milei claimed his government is working with London to ease or lift restrictions imposed after the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas war, which block British arms and key components for Argentina. Asked if talks were under way, he answered“absolutely.”

British officials pushed back, saying there are no specific negotiations and repeating that they will not approve exports that raise Argentina's combat power.

To see why this matters, look at Argentina's air force. For years, British veto power over minor components helped sink deals for Korean FA-50s, the Chinese–Pakistani JF-17 and other jets, leaving Argentina behind neighbours such as Brazil and Chile.
Milei Pushes Closer Ties with US and UK Amid Crisis
That is why the arrival of F-16 fighter jets from Denmark, in a deal backed by Washington, is important: it marks a return to Western hardware and a chance to halt the decline.

Milei links rearmament to a broader project. He argues that no country counts in world affairs without credible defence and says the Falklands/Malvinas dispute must be handled through peaceful, diplomatic means.

Critics accuse him of leaning too close to the British position and weakening Argentina's historic claim. Supporters say that closer alignment with the United States and the United Kingdom is the only realistic path to investment and an exit from crisis.

This is less about nostalgia and more about strategy. The fate of one embargo and one visit will help show how Western and how stable the South Atlantic becomes in the years ahead.
