Building Collapse in Fes Leaves Dozens Dead

(MENAFN) At least 22 individuals lost their lives and 16 others were wounded when two residential structures crumbled in northern Morocco early Wednesday, according to local media reports.

An official news agency, referencing local authorities, noted that two neighboring four-story dwellings, home to eight families, gave way in the Al-Massira district of Fes.

A news channel reported that civil protection crews persisted in their efforts at the location as they searched for any remaining survivors.

No information was released regarding the cause of the catastrophe.

Those injured were transported to a medical facility, and surrounding residences were cleared as a precaution, according to the news agency.

Public prosecutors initiated a probe to determine what led to the structural failure.

In a statement, officials explained that one of the structures was vacant, while the other was the site of an “aqiqa” celebration (a ritual feast marking the birth of a child) when the collapse occurred.
