South Korea pledges stronger climate cooperation with Pacific nations

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung pledged on Wednesday to strengthen collaboration with Pacific Island nations on climate change, during a meeting in Seoul with foreign ministers from 15 Pacific countries and the secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum.

The discussions coincided with the sixth Korea-Pacific Islands foreign ministers’ meeting, reports indicate.

"We will respond proactively to the shared threat of the climate crisis and to support vulnerable countries in achieving self-sustaining growth based on Korea's own development experience to build a better future together," Lee stated.

In a joint statement issued Tuesday following the ministerial talks, South Korea and the Pacific Island nations agreed to deepen cooperation on climate and environmental issues, as well as matters related to oceans, maritime affairs, and fisheries.

Pacific Island countries face severe risks from rising sea levels, with some regions projected to experience significant increases in high-tide flooding by the 2050s.
