Türkiye Donates 30,000 Tents to Aid Displaced Sudanese
(MENAFN) Türkiye has delivered 30,000 family tents to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to assist individuals uprooted by conflict throughout Sudan.
The agency described the donation on Tuesday as "the largest in-kind shelter" contribution it has ever received for the country.
"This contribution from the Republic of Türkiye is both timely and deeply appreciated," stated IOM Director General Amy Pope.
She added, "So many families in Sudan are living without even the most basic protection. This support will enable IOM and its partners to expand their shelter response and reach families who have lost nearly everything, giving them a safer place to stay and a small measure of security as they rebuild their lives.”
The donation arrives amid what the agency calls "one of the world's most severe humanitarian emergencies," with approximately 11.6 million people urgently requiring shelter. However, only 9.4% of the needs outlined in the Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan have been financed.
Many displaced by the conflict are residing in overcrowded or makeshift settlements, facing extreme weather, illness, and insecurity.
During a recent visit to Sudan, Pope highlighted the "almost empty warehouse," emphasizing the acute scarcity of shelter materials. Her trip expedited collaboration between IOM and Türkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), resulting in the swift deployment of the tents.
Even with significant access challenges in Darfur and Kordofan, the IOM indicated that the donation will aid in reaching families in some of the most difficult-to-access regions.
