Robert Dempsey
- Senior Lecturer in Psychology, Manchester Metropolitan University
My research and teaching focuses on understanding the psychological aspects of mental and physical health. I am particularly focused on understanding the role of perceptions of our social environment on our mental health and engagement in health-related behaviours. My current work is focused on: (1) understanding the psychology of suicidality and psychological factors implicated in people's experiences of suicidal thoughts, feelings and behaviours; (2) understanding the role of psychological processes in the experience of bipolar affective conditions; and (3) understanding how perceptions of social norms (those unwritten rules of how we think we should behave or feel based on what we think our peers do) influence our health-related behaviours such as substance use and help-seeking, and using the Social Norms Approach as a means of encouraging healthier behaviours by challenging misperceptions of social norms.
