Tokyo officials might protest US military parachute incident

(MENAFN) A Tokyo municipal government is weighing whether to file a formal protest with the US military and Japanese authorities after a US military parachute reportedly “fell onto the grounds of a children’s center” near an air base, officials said Tuesday.

The parachute was deployed during a training exercise at Yokota Air Base on November 20, according to reports. Fortunately, no residents were injured in the incident.

Officials from the Fussa municipal government and the Defense Ministry’s North Kanto Defense Bureau explained that strong winds caused both the main parachute and a pilot chute to veer off course during the exercise. The main parachute landed on the playground of the children’s center, approximately 100 meters (328 feet) from the base, and was retrieved by US military personnel that same night without obtaining city approval.

The pilot chute was later discovered on the center’s rooftop by staff on December 1 and was subsequently collected by the city.

Japan currently hosts thousands of US troops along with multiple military bases and a significant arsenal of weaponry.
