Musk Compares EU to ‘Fourth Reich’
(MENAFN) Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has compared the European Union to a new version of Nazi Germany following a substantial penalty levied against his social media platform X.
Over the weekend, Musk launched a series of intense criticisms at the EU after it fined X approximately €120 million ($140 million) for “breaching its transparency obligations” under the 2022 Digital Services Act, legislation that sets standards for content moderation and corporate accountability.
The EU Commission argued that X’s advertising practices lacked transparency and that its blue checkmark “verified account” system was misleading to users.
In response, Musk shared a post featuring the phrase “The Fourth Reich,” along with an image showing the EU flag peeling away to reveal the Nazi German flag underneath. He added the comment: “Pretty much.”
Previously, Musk had described the EU as a “bureaucratic monster,” asserting that its leadership has been “slowly smothering Europe to death.”
The billionaire, who has often criticized the EU for heavy-handed regulation, suggested that the bloc should be completely dismantled.
“The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries so that governments can better represent their people,” Musk wrote.
Top U.S. officials have voiced support for Musk, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio denouncing the EU fine as an “attack on all American tech platforms and the American people by foreign governments.”
He added, “The days of censoring Americans online are over.”
