Xi urges Macron to make to promote equal multipolar world

(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday called on French President Emmanuel Macron to “make new contributions toward promoting an equal and orderly multipolar world,” during a bilateral meeting in Beijing, according to reports. Xi emphasized that both nations should uphold multilateralism amid a rapidly changing global landscape.

The remarks came as Macron began a three-day state visit to China, which started on Wednesday with an official welcoming ceremony.

“Both China and France are independent, visionary, and responsible major countries and constructive forces in promoting multipolarity in the world and solidarity and cooperation among humanity,” Xi told Macron, as quoted by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.

Xi added that Beijing is ready to cooperate with Paris to maintain “equal dialogue and open cooperation” and to “strive for further steady progress in China-France comprehensive strategic partnership … to fully demonstrate the strategic value of this partnership and make new contributions toward promoting an equal and orderly multipolar world, as well as universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.”

He also stressed the need to “eliminate interference” in bilateral relations to develop a stable partnership, noting that the world is experiencing rapid changes and that both countries should “demonstrate their responsibility, uphold the banner of multilateralism … and firmly stand on the right side of history.”

During the visit, Xi and Macron attended a signing ceremony for cooperation agreements and the closing session of the seventh China-France Business Council meeting in Beijing.

The two leaders agreed to “commit to working” on four key areas: strengthening political mutual trust, expanding practical cooperation, promoting cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and advancing the “reform and improvement” of global governance.

“The two sides will understand and support each other on matters involving each other’s core interests and major concerns,” Mao said.
