Google’s Gemini 3 pushes OpenAI to refocus on ChatGPT
(MENAFN) Google’s latest generative AI model, Gemini 3, has triggered heightened competition in the AI industry, prompting OpenAI to concentrate its resources on maintaining ChatGPT’s market dominance.
According to reports, Gemini 3 has outperformed ChatGPT in independent performance evaluations, leading OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to temporarily shift focus away from other projects to bolster the chatbot’s capabilities. ChatGPT, however, has maintained a leading position in the generative AI space since 2022, benefiting from substantial monthly user traffic.
Google’s platforms dominate online visits, with Google Search reaching 101 billion monthly visits, followed by YouTube at 47 billion, Facebook at 10 billion, Instagram at 5.7 billion, and ChatGPT at 5.2 billion, according to Semrush. Notably, ChatGPT is the only AI-focused platform in the top 10 most visited websites.
Despite ChatGPT’s popularity, Google’s AI user base is rapidly expanding. Following the launch of Gemini 3 and the Nano Banana image-processing model in August, Gemini’s monthly active users increased from 450 million to 650 million. Global AI user preference remains heavily in favor of ChatGPT at 81.5%, with Perplexity at 11.05%, Microsoft Copilot at 3.07%, and Google Gemini at 2.97%, according to Statcounter.
Gemini 3 also excelled in “Humanity’s Last Exam,” an independent performance test, signaling a significant leap in Google’s AI capabilities.
OpenAI continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure, including software, data centers, and chip development. Financial reports indicate expected cumulative losses of $74 billion through 2028, with a full return on investment projected by 2030.
The competition between Google and OpenAI is now at a critical juncture, with Gemini 3 challenging ChatGPT’s long-standing dominance and reshaping the landscape of generative AI.
