Doha, Qatar: Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah, met yesterday with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights H E Volker Türk.

The meeting addressed several issues of mutual interest, as well as ways to strengthen cooperation between the NHRC in Qatar and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

Al-Attiyah welcomed the High Commissioner's interest in deepening cooperation with the NHRC, affirming the committee's readiness to develop joint initiatives with the OHCHR in alignment with its international priorities and in support of shared aspirations.

Al-Attiyah highlighted the close and productive cooperation with the United Nations Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region, noting the Center's role-together with the NHRC-in building human rights capacities among workers in the government sector and civil society institutions in Qatar.

She explained that the NHRC and the UN Center have organized numerous joint training courses for employees of government ministries and civil society organizations, in addition to the Center's participation in various events organized by the Committee.

She noted that Qatar has achieved legislative reforms that include equality among citizens in political rights.

She also pointed to an important legislative development: the issuance of the Law on Persons with Disabilities, which strengthened the alignment of national legislation with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Al-Attiyah added,“Work is underway to adopt the draft Child Law, which will constitute a qualitative leap in protecting children's rights in care, education, and protection from violence and exploitation. These two laws reflect the State's commitment to enhancing protection for groups most in need of support and care.”
