Turkish, Iranian FMs vow to boost trade collaboration

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized on Sunday the importance of deepening collaboration with Iran across trade, energy, and regional security issues, during a working visit to Tehran, according to reports.

Speaking alongside Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Fidan said: “Trade and energy are top priorities, and we saw again today there is much more to be done,” highlighting the long-standing cooperation between the two nations.

The ministers agreed to enhance border management, increase the number of operational border gates, and implement new logistics and transportation projects. Fidan noted: “Our countries have large populations, close relations, and high trade, but our trade needs to be more efficient,” marking his fourth visit to Tehran in his capacity as foreign minister.

The talks also addressed irregular migration, particularly flows from Afghanistan. Fidan said: “We aim to tackle this issue together with Iran,” stressing the need for tangible regional cooperation. He welcomed Iran’s plan to open a new consulate in Van, eastern Türkiye, and pledged to attend the inauguration if Araghchi is present.

Both ministers agreed to convene the ninth Türkiye-Iran High-Level Cooperation Council at the presidential level in the near future.

On regional security, Fidan noted that both countries view “Israel as the biggest threat to stability in the Middle East,” citing concerns over Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Israeli expansionist policies. He added: “The international community must fulfill its responsibilities.”
