Russia Says Ukraine Behind Strikes on Black Sea Oil Tanker

(MENAFN) Russia accused Ukraine of orchestrating strikes against two oil tankers in the Black Sea this week, both bound for the Russian port of Novorossiysk, according to a Sunday statement.

"We strongly condemn the terrorist attacks and the actions of all parties involved in their planning and implementation," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova declared in an official release that also addressed a separate assault on a Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) oil terminal one day earlier.

The CPC confirmed Saturday that unmanned vessels struck one of the terminal's single-point moorings during a morning raid, forcing a halt to "loading and other operations" under directives from Russian authorities.

On Friday, emergency responders evacuated the entire crew from the tanker KAIROS after it ignited due to an external cause, Turkey's Directorate General for Maritime Affairs announced on X, the social media platform owned by a US company.

The directorate reported that the empty KAIROS vessel, sailing toward Novorossiysk, burst into flames 28 miles (45 kilometers) from Turkey's coastline. Shortly after, another tanker identified as VIRAT signaled it had sustained damage roughly 35 nautical miles offshore in the Black Sea.

Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu posted on Turkish social platform NSosyal that evening, confirming coordinated response operations with relevant national agencies following explosions aboard both empty oil carriers.

Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry lodged a formal protest Sunday regarding what it termed "another deliberate attack" on the Novorossiysk terminal, demanding Ukraine implement "effective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future."

Zakharova contended that Ukrainian security services "effectively claimed involvement" in both events by "publishing video evidence" through Ukrainian media outlets.

Moscow interprets both incidents as efforts to obstruct "ongoing international efforts to bring about a sustainable peace," she stated.

The spokeswoman urged international condemnation, warning the attacks "threaten freedom of navigation in this waterway."

Ukrainian officials have remained silent on both incidents and have not addressed Zakharova's allegations.
